Der Workshop "Cell Differentiation and Defense" wird von der Klinischen Forschergruppe "Zelldifferenzierung und lokale Regulationssysteme" veranstaltet. Das Spurenelement Selen steht im Mittelpunkt des ersten Veranstaltungsblocks, der den Titel "Selenoproteins" trägt. Beim Thema Schilddrüse geht es dann vor allem um die Entstehung von Schilddrüsen-Karzinomen und neue Behandlungsmöglichkeiten. Auch aktuelle Fragen zu den Volkskrankheiten Diabetes und Osteoporose werden besprochen. Schließlich befassen sich die Wissenschaftler mit Tumorerkrankungen des Magen-Darm-Traktes sowie mit chronischen Erkrankungen der Atemwege und der Entstehung von Asthma.
