However, there are signs that public discourse is evolving in this direction: Concerns with “post-truth” politicians and “fake news” have exploded into media and public discourse during the last few years. Social media are replete with pseudoscience and conspiracy theories that compete with valuable scientific information for the public’s attention. I examine some putative causes for those trends and explore their consequences in everyday life and how they affect the conduct and communication of science. I examine the variables that determine people’s attitudes towards science and suggest ways in which the effects of misinformation and resistance to scientific evidence can be attenuated.
