Classed Bodies: On the Body History of Social Inequality, 1770s to 1870s

This workshop explores the transformations of (conceptions of) the body between 1770 and 1870, with a focus on class and social inequality.

First, it seeks to bring class back into the history of the body. Focusing on the historical production of poor, socially disadvantaged or marginalized bodies, we ask how different forms and relations of social inequality are materialized in bodies and understandings of their health and illness, and how class intersects with other categories of difference such as race, gender or dis/ability.

Second, the workshop focuses on a period that not only witnessed the emergence of the ‘social question’ as a pressing issue in modern societies, but that is also seen as a crucial period of transition in which bodies and conceptions of the body underwent significant and long-lasting changes
