Things described in poetry convey knowledge about the past. This conference explores the epistemic status of poems, focusing on the knowledge conveyed about the past through poetic descriptions. While poems are often seen as sources of historical and archaeological knowledge, the discussion has been overshadowed by debates on the poetics of knowledge in modern literature. We aim to bridge this gap by examining ancient and early modern didactic poetry as a means of knowldge transmission. By studying the strategies employed in didactic poetry and expanding beyond Latin didactic poetry, the conference aims to shed new light on the potential of poetic genres and languages for conveying knowledge about the past.
