The basis on which journalists and researchers have an impact on society is trust. But the integrity of both professions is increasingly being questioned – not least by populist movements. So where does politics take effect in researchers’ and journalists’ work? Are journalism and research driven by the attention economy of politics and new media bubbles? Or are they not political enough when it comes to issues that are crucial for the future, such as combating climate change? Is it their responsibility to raise democratic awareness in a time of increasing populism, fake news and disinformation?
In a public debate we want to focus on the politicisation of research and the media. Come and join the conversation!
Panelists:
Ralf Beste (Federal Foreign Office)
Zulfikar Abbany (Deutsche Welle)
Leonie Sontheimer (Netzwerk Klimajournalismus)
This event is organised by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the International Journalists' Programmes.
It is part of the Communication Lab for Exchange between Research and Media of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/apply/sponsorship-programmes/humboldt-comm...). Twice a year, ten Humboldt Fellows meet up with ten journalists from around the world. The ten journalists are selected by the International Journalists’ Programmes organisation (IJP e.V.). In teams of two they develop a piece of cutting-edge science journalism. Highly qualified mentors supervise the process. During four-day workshops, participants discuss what they expect from one another, how close cooperation works, and what constitutes good research communication.
The programme is funded by the Federal Foreign Office.
