Both South Korea and Germany have recently published policy documents on their Indo-Pacific strategies, detailing their approaches to a region that is increasingly driven by political tensions. The German and Korean strategies are shaped by a focus on rules and norms, seeking to install guardrails against unbridled great power competition; they describe it as a space of economic opportunity and not just security concerns; and they highlight climate change as an urgent priority for collective action.
As Korea and Germany celebrate the 140th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in this year, PRIF and the Korean Consulate General in Frankfurt will host a bilateral Korean-German workshop focused on the strategies pertaining to the Indo-Pacific region. The primary objectives are to foster a deeper mutual comprehension of each side‘s approaches to the region and to explore avenues for enhancing policy coordination, given that both nations have identified each other as desirable partners.
The workshop, featuring contributions from distinguished experts and practitioners from both nations, will include dedicated panels on Korea‘s and Germany‘s strategies, culminating in a closing session to pinpoint areas of convergence and potentially forge a shared agenda for the future.
The workshop will be held in English and under Chatham-House-Rules.
