SmallData Symposium 2024

Event on October 7th and 8th, 2024, Demonstrates How AI is Possible Even with Limited Data

Artificial intelligence is often hampered by limited amounts of data, for example in cutting-edge biomedical research. At the 2024 SmallData Symposium, the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1597 “Small Data” will provide a platform for discussing solutions to this issue, and fully leveraging the potential of AI, e.g. in molecular medicine, rare diseases, and underrepresented groups.

In addition to experts from the CRC and representatives of the University of Freiburg, this discussion will feature international experts, e.g. from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), USA, and the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), France. One discusion topic will be how to incorporate knowledge from foundation models that are pre-trained on large data sets, such as the large language models (LLMs) in ChatGPT. An overarching theme will be how to best integrate AI into biomedical research by incorporating expert knowledge into machine machine learning, which might even require a paradigm shift in research culture.

The symposium stands out for its innovative formats designed to promote interaction, exchange and collaboration. These include interdisciplinary panel discussions where experts from medicine, biomedicine, statistics/systems modeling, and mathematics will share their perspectives to develop joint solutions for small data challenges. Another important part of the event is the “Poster Pitches”. Here, scientists and established researchers will briefly pitch their research, followed by opportunities for in-depth discussions after the tour. This will be key to shaping the currently emerging small data movement in AI.

For members of the press, there will be an opportunity on October 7th, 2024, at 12:30 PM to attend an exclusive press briefing with symposium speakers from the first session. This will facilitate a deeper understanding of the topics covered in their presentations.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
