17th Scientific Tuberculosis Symposium at Akkon University

On March 18–19, 2025, Akkon University of Human Sciences will host the 17th Scientific Symposium on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day. Organized by the Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA), the symposium will focus on the role of tuberculosis in the context of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and explore current challenges and solutions.

Tuberculosis and antimicrobial resistances – Role model, lessons learned and future challenges

Antimicrobial resistances (AMR) will become the most important global health threat within the next years. Tuberculosis treatment faces increasing multidrug resistance, and the TB community has outstanding experiences in treatment of MDR-/XDR-TB, in preventing the emergence of resistances and in building international networks and programs in fighting MDR TB. Thus, tuberculosis is both a role model for AMR counter actions and one of the highest priorities in addressing resistances. In our 17th Symposium on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day, we would like to review the current situation of MDR TB and its relationship to resistances in other infectious diseases.

Together with our international partners, we would like to study and discuss current trends in TB research and control in face of the current epidemiological trends in Europe and worldwide. Of course and as usual, current developments and state-of-the-art presentations in diagnostics, treatment and prevention/vaccine development also form part of the symposium. The symposium is the seventeenth since Koch Mechnikov Forum (KMF) decided to start the symposium series in 2007 on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Robert Koch’s famous lecture “About tuberculosis”. Since then,
the annual symposia had various foci and Akkon University with its Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA) took over organization and hosting. We are looking forward to welcoming you in person, TB experts, representatives from WHO, health politics, private companies, hospitals and other TB facilities from all over Europe and globally, to discuss the most imminent questions of TB control in the nearer future! TB control must not be neglected, especially MDR and its impact on TB control and national TB programs! Thus, the symposium has a scientific and a political approach.
