While scientific insights continuously confirm that expected climate damages will get more severe, the policy context for legislating decarbonization in the European Union remains challenging. One policy priority of the new European Commission is to foster competitiveness; at the same time parties positioning themselves against climate change mitigation policy were successful in elections in several member states. Against this background, this summer European institutions are debating whether 90 per cent in emission reductions relative to 1990 should be the target the continent pursues by 2040, building on the -55 per cent by 2030.
The “ClimateLecture”, hosted jointly by five Young Academies across European Countries, will provide a diversity of academic views across the social sciences and EU member states on the future of climate policy-making at the European level. The panel will discuss inequality and populism as challenges to enacting further climate change mitigation policy. At the same time, this lecture will provide an understanding of the diverse implications of EU climate policy legislation for different member states.
