Spotlight on Mountain Research
Mountain regions cover around a quarter of the Earth's surface; they are home to over a billion people and provide up to 25% of the world's population with resources. However, they are also particularly affected by global warming and its ecological and socio-economic consequences - from the Alps to the Himalayas, the Andes and other mountain regions around the world.
Thematic Focus 2025
The year 2025 has been declared the International Year of Glacier Conservation by the United Nations (UN) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which is why glaciers and their global significance are a core focus of the IMC. Due to the current situation, there will also be a first major scientific exchange on the rockfall in Blatten (Switzerland), which occured in May 2025.
The conference will address a variety of topics:
- Climate change at different altitudes
- Melting glaciers and permafrost
- Extreme weather events and natural hazards
- Water systems in mountain regions
- Protective forests in the mountains
- Ecosystems and biodiversity
- Nature reserves in mountain landscapes
- Land use (agriculture, infrastructure, mobility, tourism)
- Adaptation strategies and resilience
- Spatial planning in mountain regions
- Settlement history of mountain regions
- Pathways to climate neutrality
For media representatives
The conference offers the opportunity to talk to international experts in mountain research. The IMC media team is happy to support journalists in identifying and preparing topics and arranging interview partners.

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
