Auf evangelischer Seite bemühten sich die liberale Theologie und der Kulturprotestantismus um eine Deutung des Christentums im Geist der kantischen und nachkantischen Philosophie. In der katholischen Kirche entstand die Neuscholastik geradezu als Gegenbewegung zu dem Versuch, dem aufgeklärten Denken einen Platz zu sichern.
Der Diskussionsabend zeichnet ideenpolitische Konfliktlinien nach, die bis heute fortwirken.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Unterburger (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) stellt am Beispiel des Jesuiten Josef Kleutgen (1811–1883) die katholische Neuscholastik vor.
Prof. Dr. Constantin Plaul (Universität Regensburg) präsentiert Ernst Troeltsch (1865–1923) als Vertreter der liberalen Theologie.
Unter der Moderation von Prof. Dr. Georg Sans SJ diskutieren sie die Frage, wie mit dem Erbe der Aufklärung umgegangen werden soll.
