Sustainable Supply Chains in a Fragmented World Economy

Global value chains are increasingly shaped by geopolitical competition, economic security, and strategic industrial policies. As trade becomes more fragmented, the question is whether sustainability and development objectives can still be advanced through global value chain governance.

Global value chains have long been a central pillar of globalisation, contributing to economic integration and development. At the same time, policymakers have increasingly sought to address sustainability challenges such as pollution, labour conditions, and human rights.

Today, however, global value chains are increasingly being reshaped by geopolitical tensions, economic security concerns, and new industrial strategies. Governments are prioritising supply chain resilience, access to critical minerals, and the reduction of strategic dependencies. These developments are contributing to a more fragmented global trade landscape.

This GIGA Forum will explore how governance approaches to global value chains may need to adapt to this changing environment. In the context of Hamburg’s role as a major global trading hub and the city’s growing prominence as a venue for international sustainability dialogue—highlighted by the Hamburg Sustainability Conference— the discussion will address:

How does geopolitical fragmentation reshape global value chains and their governance?

Can sustainability and development objectives still be advanced in an era of economic insecurity and strategic competition?

What role can policy, regulation, and international cooperation play in aligning global value chains with climate and development goals?

Prof. Dr. Clara Brandi is a Senior Researcher at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and a Professor of International Economics / Development Economics at the University of Bonn.
