Die bahnbrechende Entdeckung des Gluons, des Teilchens, das für die Kernkraft verantwortlich ist, konnte 1979 am PETRA-Speicherring bei DESY gefeiert werden. Heute ist HERA der große Beschleuniger für die Teilchenphysik, der von mehreren 1000 Physikerinnen und Physikern aus aller Welt genutzt wird.
In einigen Jahren wird HERA den Betrieb einstellen und alle Kräfte der Teilchenphysiker bei DESY werden sich auf das nächste große Projekt konzentrieren: den Internationalen Linearcollider ILC, einen Linearbeschleuniger mit extrem hoher Energie. Diese "Weltmaschine", deren Standort noch nicht feststeht, wird zusammen mit dem "Large Hadron Collider" bei CERN in Genf der Teilchenphysik den Weg ins nächste Jahrzehnt weisen.
