"Photodynamik" ist ein spezielles Gebiet der medizinischen Forschung, Diagnostik und Behandlung. Ihr Prinzip besteht darin, dass die drei Komponenten Licht, lichtsensible Substanz und Sauerstoff in kurzer Zeitabfolge miteinander in Wechselwirkung treten. Eine sogenannte photosensible Substanz entfaltet nach Lichteinwirkung eine zellzerstörende Wirkung, die therapeutisch genutzt werden kann, z.B. bei der Therapie von Tumoren.
Bereits 1900 bis 1400 vor Christus wurden vor allem in Ägypten und Indien Hautkrankheiten durch Einnahme von Substanzen und Bestrahlung mit Sonnenlicht behandelt - die Photodynamik hat also eine Jahrhunderte lange Tradition.
Das aktuelle wissenschaftliche Programm des zehnten Weltkongresses der Internationalen Photodynamischen Gesellschaft wird alle Aspekte der Photodynamik beleuchten, angefangen von der Grundlagenforschung über die Entwicklung von Medikamenten bis zur klinischen Anwendung der Photodynamik in Diagnose und Therapie bösartiger Erkrankungen. Ebenso werden neue Anwendungsgebiete wie die Behandlung von Infektionen Teil des wissenschaftlichen Programms sein - speziell auch im Hinblick auf den Nutzen für den Patienten.
