"Social Conditions of Creativity"

The WZB invites to a colloquium with Ronald Inglehart

"Social Conditions of Creativity: Declining Social Capital,
or Rising Tolerance, Creativity and Democracy?"

Moderated by Wolfgang Merkel (WZB)

In his talk Ronald Inglehart will confront arguments of prominent social scientists such as Robert Putnam who see a threat to democracy in the erosion of social capital. The organizational base of democracy is allegedly weakened through the erosion of virtually all bureaucratized forms of participation - as reflected in the decrease in membership in churches, political parties, labour unions.

Examining evidence from 80 nations concerning the erosion of social capital Inglehart argues that it is being replaced by other, much more dynamic and productive values: inclusion, creativity, tolerance of diversity which produce more flexible and more effective forms of mass pressures on elites.

Ronald Inglehart is presently guest of the president at the WZB. During his stay he will focus his studies on "Cultural Change", which will result in two book publications in summer 2005. One publication on "Modernization, Cultural Change, and Democracy" (New York: Cambridge University Press) will address the specialized public while the other publication is meant for a wider readership: its working title is "What People want out of Life is changing - what does it mean". Inglehart is Professor of Political Science and Program Director at the Center for Political Studies at the University of Michigan.
