Mit dem Einsatz von RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) zusätzlich zum Barcode können nicht nur Sortierung, Recycling und logistische Abläufe erleichtert werden. Ein Mehrwert entsteht zudem durch erhöhte Sicherheit bei Transport und Lagerung, zum Beispiel entsprechend des Zusammenladeverbotes bei Gefahrgut-Transporten. Interessant sind die Untersuchungen auch angesichts der neuen EU-Gesetzgebung zur Chargen-Verfolgung in der Lebensmittelbranche.
