Rapid progress is observed in cardiovascular imaging of various applications. One exciting field is molecular and cellular imaging by nuclear, magnetic resonance and optical techniques. One aim of molecular/cellular imaging is to monitor cell activity and migration.
Potential applications could be stem cell therapy or identification of the activity of atherosclerotic plaques. Other activities focus on visualization of cardiac gene activity and receptor status.
Another proceeding field is electrotherapy within the MR-scanner. Here, safety issues have to be considered. Since the number of patients with pacemaker or ICD increases, and, on the other hand, MRT develops to be the superior imaging modality in many applications, the development of MR compatible devices is of ultimate importance.
Interventional electrophysiology within the MR-scanner aims to exploit the high spatial resolution of the technique for complex procedures. However, problems of catheter visualization and HF-therapy monitoring remain a challenge.
