"Unter den Millionen Menschen, die in der Vergangenheit den Atlantik überquerten, bildeten Kaufleute und Kolonialbeamte eine besondere Gruppe: Während Auswanderer und Sklaven darauf hofften, irgendwann einmal an einem Ort fest anzukommen, war ihr Leben bewusst auf häufige Ortswechsel ausgerichtet. Diese waren notwendiger oder gar erwünschter Teil der eigenen Biographie, stellten sie doch eine Bedingung des gesellschaftlichen Aufstiegs dar", erläutert Prof. Mücke. "Angesichts der spezifischen Lebenswege von Kaufleuten und Kolonialbeamten stellt sich die Frage, inwieweit sie die Vorstellung von der atlantischen Welt geprägt haben."
