Höhepunkte der GSI-Forschung sind z.B. die Entdeckung neuer Elemente und die Entwicklung einer neuartigen Kerbstherapie mit Ionenstrahlen.
Während des Festprogramms sprechen u.a. Frau E. Bulmahn, Bundesministerin für Bildung und Forschung, Frau Ruth Wagner, Hessische Ministerin für Wissenschaft und Kunst,
Herr Peter Benz, Oberbürgermeiser der Stadt Darmstadt.
Im Anschluss wird das neue Laser-Gebäude eingeweiht, in dem Deutschlands stärkster Laser PHELIX aufgebaut wird und der zusammen mit Schwerionenstrahlen ganz neue Experimentiermöglichkeiten vor allem in der Atom- und Plasmaphysik eröffnen wird.
Als Rahmenprogramm finden Tage der offenen Tür und eine eigens entworfene Ausstellung statt: www.schauplatz-wissenschaft.de
