Das "Insekt des Jahres" wird das elfte Mal proklamiert. Das gleichnamige Kuratorium will damit auf diese besondere Tiergruppe hinweisen, die in der Bevölkerung meist als lästig, z.B. Wanzen und Mücken, und nur in wenigen Fällen, etwa bei Schmetterlingen, als schön empfunden werden. Insekten sind die größte Tiergruppe überhaupt. Schätzungen gehen davon aus, dass über 80 % aller Tiere Insekten sind. Es sind noch längst nicht alle Tiere beschrieben oder entdeckt worden.
Das Insekt 2009 wird in Berlin in Wort, Bild und mittels Filmaufnahmen vorgestellt.
