Prof. Hyvärinen ist Direktorin des Germanistischen Instituts der Universität Helsinki und ausgewiesene Spezialistin für kontrastive Linguistik des Sprachenpaars Finnisch-Deutsch. Für ihre Forschungen wurde sie u. a. mit dem "Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm-Preis 2007" des DAAD geehrt.
