The presentation will review developments in Thai politics since the military coup d'etat of 19 September 2006, including judicial actions to curtail the power of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra and his allies; constitutional revision and the conserva-tive turn; the election of December 2007; the return of the People's Alliance for De-mocracy; the PAD occupation of Government House and the airports; the role of network monarchy; the growing, colour-coded societal divides in Thailand; the rise and fall of the People's Power Party; and the Abhisit government and resistance from the redshirts. The talk will draw upon several recent periods of research conducted in Bangkok and Pattani.
Prof. Duncan McCargo teaches Southeast Asian politics at the University of Leeds (Faculty of Education, Social Science and Law).
Dr. Marco Bünte is a research fellow at the GIGA Institute of Asian Studies.
