Vom Stoffwechsel bis zur Vererbung - alle zentralen Lebensvorgänge sind informationsgesteuert. Die Annahme, dass die in den Erbmolekülen verschlüsselte Information die Struktur einer Sprache hat, wirft die Frage auf, ob das Prinzip der Codierung nicht nur auf die menschliche Sprache, sondern auf alle Ausdrucksformen genetischer Information bezogen werden kann. Dementsprechend wäre Sprache ein allgemeines Naturprinzip, das für den Aufbau und die Evolution lebender Systeme und damit für die lebenswissenschaftliche Grundlagenforschung und Biotechnologie von enormer Bedeutung ist.
