Unter dem Titel "The Birth of Immunology" gewährt eine Ausstellung im Rahmen des 2nd European Congress of Immunology vom 13. bis 16. September im ICC in Berlin einen Einblick in die rasante Geschichte der Immunologie. Wie kaum eine andere Disziplin hat die Immunologie seit Ausgang des 19. Jahrhunderts Fortschritte in der Medizin beflügelt, allein fünf Nobelpreise wurden für die immunologischen Forschungen um 1900 vergeben. Entscheidend war die Erkenntnis, dass Immunität ein aktiver biologischer Prozess ist, mit dem der Körper auf Eindringlinge reagiert. Die Unterscheidung zwischen "Selbst" und "Fremd" ist die Grundlage eines funktionierenden Immunsystems.
