Das Byzantinische Reich ist der breiten Öffentlichkeit meist nur durch die bedeutenden Kunstwerke bekannt, die bis zur Eroberung Konstantinopels 1453 nach Westeuropa gelangt sind. Die komplexe Kultur dieses letzten antiken Gemeinwesens in Europa, in dem die klassischen Bildungsinhalte bis ins Spätmittelalter weitergetragen worden sind, ist jedoch weitgehend unbekannt.
Das RGZM beschäftigt sich seit vielen Jahren mit der byzantinischen Archäologie und ist derzeit mit der Vorbereitung einer großen Ausstellung befasst, die 2010 in Bonn unter dem Titel "Byzanz - Pracht und Alltag" gezeigt werden wird.
