Der Große Refraktor wurde am 26. August 1899 in Anwesenheit von Kaiser Wilhelm II als Hauptteleskop des Astrophysikalischen Observatoriums Potsdam. Damals wie auch heute ist er das viertgrößte Linsenfernrohr der Welt, als fotografisch korrigierter Refraktor sogar das größte. Erfolge verzeichnete der Große Refraktor insbesondere bei der Messung von Doppelsternen nach photometrischen Verfahren. Am 31. Mai 2006 wurde er nach umfangreicher Restaurierung wiedereröffnet und kann nun im Rahmen von Führungen besichtigt werden.

Die Veranstaltung ist offen für Jedermann. Der Eintritt ist frei, es wird jedoch um eine Spende für den Erhalt des Großen Refraktors gebeten.
