Pierre Cassou-Noguès: To be a machine: Philosophy and Fiction

Mittwochsvortrag. In Kooperation mit dem Centre Marc Bloch http://www.cmb.hu-berlin.de/cmb/

The lecture concerns the representations of the human being as a machine and the various ways in which the human being can be described as a machine. Two models will be distinguished, two paradigms for this machine that represents the human body. Firstly, Descartes' machine, conceived as a kind of clock, is to reproduce our bodily movements. Secondly, the Turing machine is a calculating machine, which above all is intended to reproduce our thinking processes. These two models can be used as markers to which compare other machines. Leibniz' spirituale automata, Poe's detective Arsène Dupin, Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, Ph. K. Dick's androids or Jean Perdrizet' strange inventions will serve as examples. In this process of comparison, the properties of the two paradigms will be enriched. Finally, the lecture will evoke a series of human functions and compare the two machines' ability to execute them: speech, retroaction, reproduction.

Moderation: Jan Söffner (ZfL)
Der Vortrag erfolgt in englischer Sprache.

Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
