Geboren in der Weimarer Republik, aufgewachsen im Berlin der NS-Zeit, floh er mit seiner Familie vor den Nazis ans andere Ende der Welt, nach Shanghai. Von dort emigrierte er in die USA und machte Karriere in Wirtschaft und Politik, unter anderem im State Department unter Präsident Kennedy und als Finanzminister unter Präsident Carter. 1997 folgte er dem Ruf seiner Heimatstadt und kehrte nach Berlin zurück, um das Jüdische Museum aufzubauen. Die Veranstaltung wird von Hans Jakob Ginsburg, Korrespondent der Wirtschaftswoche in Düsseldorf, moderiert.
