When Getting the Science Right is not Getting the Right Science

Lecture by Kenneth Prewitt (Columbia)
Introduction by Helmut K. Anheier (Hertie School)

Professor Prewitt takes a critical look at the development and current role of policy analysis in the United States and asks: Are social scientists asking the right questions, are they delivering the right kinds of analysis, and are they offering the right answers for policymakers? And do we know what policymakers really need? Do they know?"

Kenneth Prewitt is the Carnegie Professor of Public Affairs and the Vice-President for Global Centers at Columbia University. In addition to teaching for many years at the University of Chicago he has served as the Director of the United States Census Bureau, Director of the National Opinion Research Center, President of the Social Science Research Council, and Senior Vice President of the Rockefeller Foundation. Among his awards are a Guggenheim Fellowship, honorary degrees from Carnegie Mellon and Southern Methodist University, a Distinguished Service Award from the New School for Social Research, the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany, the Charles E. Merriam Lifetime Career Award, American Political Science Association and a Lifetime National Associate of the NRC/NAS. Recent books: The Hard Count: The Political and Social Challenges of Census Mobilization (2006) Politics and Science in Census Taking (2003), The Legitimacy of Foundations (2006). He is currently completing Counting America's Race: Do We Still Want To? Do We Still Need To? He currently chairs the National Academies of Science standing committee on the "The Use of Social Science Evidence in Policymaking."
