What Geosciences have to do with a mobile phone?
GEOTECHNOLOGIEN Keynote Lecture by Prof. Dr. Jens Gutzmer, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, on resource security at the EGU Annual Meeting 5th April in Vienna, 7 pm, Room 12, admission free
Commodity and resource security has been one of the dominant themes of environmental and economic politics in recent months. Can an increasingly technology dependent society afford the often inefficient use of mineral and metallic raw materials? And will we continue to meet the ever-increasing demand for mineral deposits? Just how important raw materials are for our society, is apparent on the subject of "rare earth metals", which are needed, for example, in the production such as mobile phones. Imagine if one of the largest suppliers of these commodities were to artificially make the supply on the world market scarce. This monopoly position would allow him to influence world politics. A threat to free, global trade? Or a wake-up call to deal with the efficient use and effective search for new deposits?
The development of technologies for the efficient exploration, extraction and exploitation of mineral and metallic raw materials is therefore the task of an institution to be founded this year in Freiberg (Saxony) as a close cooperation between the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf.
The research and development program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN invites you to a discussion on this subject. As part of the annual meeting of the European Geoscience Union (EGU) in Vienna Prof. Jens Gutzmer will talk on the subject in the context of GEOTECHNOLOGIEN Keynote Lecture, Tuesday the 5th April at 5:30pm. During the subsequent reception, you have the opportunity to continue the discussion on resource policy and the sustainable use of raw materials over a glass of wine and more.

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
