Evolvability (or lack thereof) in self-sustaining autocatalytic networks

Biological evolution came into existence with the first self-sustaining evolutionary unit, but we are still guessing how chemical evolution could have progressed prior to reaching that stage. The two current camps of debate impose conflicting constraints on each other’s premises. Metabolism-first advocates consider improbable that RNA-like self-replicating polymers appeared before natural selection had operated on chemical networks, whereas genetics-first supporters find implausible that molecular networks without genetic (RNA, DNA) control could have undergone Darwinian evolution. While there are models that explain the appearance of reflexively autocatalytic networks, we are still a long way from showing whether or not such autocatalytic chemical systems offer a plausible route to the emergence of evolvability (i.e., the ability that Darwinian selection can operate on such systems) without template replication.
