Kay gilt als der Vater der objektorientierten Programmierung und formulierte bereits 1968 die Grundidee für Laptops und Tablet-Computer. Das Konzept der fensterbasierten, grafischen Bedienoberflächen geht ebenso auf ihn zurück wie die Programmiersprache Smalltalk und der 2005 von ihm vorgestellte 100 Dollar Laptop – ein speziell für den Einsatz im Schulunterricht konzipiertes Lernwerkzeug.
Kay leitet heute das Viewpoints Research Institute, das eng mit dem HPI-Fachgebiet Software-Architekturen (Prof. Hirschfeld) zusammenarbeitet. Sein vielzitiertes Wort „der beste Weg, die Zukunft vorauszusagen ist, sie selbst zu erfinden“ spiegelt auch den Anspruch unseres Instituts wieder.
Der HPI Fellowship Award wird an renommierte Persönlichkeiten aus Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik verliehen.
