Geselligkeit gilt gemeinhin als eine Grundform menschlichen Miteinanders. Sie ist von den vielfältigen Zwängen der ökonomisch bestimmten Alltagswirklichkeit abgehoben und dient nicht nur der Zerstreuung, sondern hat zugleich auch eine identitätsstiftende Bedeutung. Vor allem in den Geselligkeitskulturen der literarischen, musikalischen und bildkünstlerischen Romantik konvergieren häufig Schaffensplan und Lebensplan in völlig neuartiger Weise. Im geselligen Kreis werden lebensgeschichtliche Entwürfe und künstlerische Positionen durchgespielt, die intimes und provozierendes, intellektuelles und körperliches, performatives und konspiratives, exklusionsmarkierendes und polemisches Verhalten bündeln.
