With regard to economic and educational competitiveness the USA are losing ground. The American higher education system must cope with a rapidly changing demographic situation. At the same time, it is facing enormous financial challenges. State support has been cut heavily and policymakers increasingly view education as an individual benefit. What can be done to improve the situation and to prepare the educational system for the future?
Michael W. Kirst argues that both policymakers and educational institutions have to focus on making the system more productive. He presents and discusses examples of how business models need to be changed to deal with demographic changes, funding cuts, competition, and politics.
The discussion after the talk will highlight the lessons to be learned from the US experience for German education experts.
