Bruce Ackerman - A New Progressive Agenda for the Twenty-First Century

A lecture by Bruce Ackerman, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, Yale University.

With a commentary by Andrea Seibel, Deputy Editor-in-Chief at Die Welt.

17 November 2011; 6.30 - 8 p.m.
Friedrichstraße 180, 10117 Berlin

Are political ideologies still providing a progressive agenda for the 21st century? Bruce Ackerman has developed four large reforms for revitalizing political and economic citizenship: "Voting With Dollars" gives citizens the means to support their favoured political party or candidates; the "National Endowment for Journalism" gives each citizen the resources to fund professional internet journalism; "Deliberation Day" proposes a new national holiday, held before elections, where citizens have the opportunity to engage with party representatives in a debate; and the "Stakeholder Society" which grants each young adult a “citizen‘s inheritance” of $80,000 to invest in his or her own future.

Despite the economic crisis, Ackerman argues that these proposals are well within the bounds of economic and political reality. He will discuss how the adoption of such reforms might revitalize the exercise of political and economic citizenship and give real meaning to equal opportunity in the 21st century.

This lecture by Bruce Ackerman is the second event of our newly established Hertie School Lecture Series: Moral Challenges in a Globalizing World - Ethics and Public Policy. This series brings together leading academics in the field of normative political theory, policy makers and other experts to explore today's ethical challenges in public policy.
