Abstract
The lecture is dedicated to the history and development of semiconductor heterostructure research. Heterostructures are a new kind of semi-conductor material, “man-made crystals”, in contrast to the ordinary semiconductor material, “God-made crystals”. Three types of heterostructures will be discussed: classical hetero-structures, quantum well and superlattice heterostructures, quantum wire and quantum dot heterostructures. For each of the above types the following aspects will be considered: fundamental physical phenomena, important consequences for applications and important technological considerations.

It is fair to say that the development of research and technology of hetero-structures had several important consequences. First of all, modern optoelectronics is based on heterostructure application (DHS laser is a key device of modern optoelectronics, HS PD is the most efficient and high-speed photo diode, OEIC is the only solution to the high information density of optical communication systems). Secondly, heterostructures are widely-used in high speed microelectronics. Besides, high temperature and high speed power electronics is new broad field of heterostructure application. Heterostructures are also used for solar energy conversion (they are the most expensive photocells and the cheapest solar electricity producer).

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
