The question will be raised if GIS-based reconstructions of boundaries, leading to visualization, multimedia presentation of historical data, and to advanced mapping, at the same time contain potentials for rewriting the territorial histories of nations and/or regions in Europe from the early modern period to the twentieth century. How does the nearly complete control in data and knowledge about long-term territorial changes, which a GIS can offer, lead to new questions regarding the historical divisions of peoples – be they administrative, religious, dynastic, ethnic, or cultural – and their overcoming or persistence during state-building processes?
