Neben Aspekten der Grundlagenforschung stehen der weltweite Anstieg Antibiotika-resistenter Gonokokkenstämme und neue Impfstoffentwicklungen bei Meningokokken im Vordergrund.
Diese internationale Tagung findet alle zwei Jahre statt; in Deutschland war sie zuletzt 1990. Veranstalter 2012 sind das Institut für Hygiene und Mikrobiologie der Universität Würzburg (Prof. Dr. Matthias Frosch, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Vogel) und der Lehrstuhl für Mikrobiologie der Universität Würzburg (Prof. Dr. Thomas Rudel).
