Der Vortrag wird einen Einblick in das tragische Leben des ersten ordentlichen Professor für Zoologie in Greifswald, Reinhold Buchholz, geben. Nach schwerer Jugend studierte Buchholz Medizin, forschte aber schon früh auf zoologischem Gebiet. Ab 1864 war er Kustos des Zoologischen Museum in Greifswald und unternahm erste Studienreisen. Bemerkenswert war vor allem seine Teilnahme an einer Nordpolarexpedition, die mit einer 200-tägigen Drift auf einer Eisscholle endete. Wenig später folgte eine mehrjährige und sehr ergiebige Sammelreise in das tropische Afrika, die wiederum zu einer Schiffshavarie führte. Nach seiner Rückkehr wurde er 1876 als erster ordentlicher Professor für Zoologie in Greifswald berufen.
