Abstract: In the early modern period, Europeans came to control much of the long-distance commerce that for the first time stretched around the globe, while at the same time they developed new methods for investigating and assessing natural phenomena, which are often termed the "scientific revolution". The two developments were not simply a coincidence, but were closely related. Many kinds of organizational practices, including the sharing of certain kinds of information, were common to both, and both drew attention to the importance of material things and their powers. The early modern period in Europe thus saw the grwing power of something like an information economy. Examples from the Dutch Golden Age make this clear.
