Dies ist der erste Spielfilm über den Mann, der, in die Sklaverei hineingeboren, zum französischen Offizier avancierte und sogar Napoleon herausforderte, indem er sein Land Haïti 1804 zur ersten unabhängigen Schwarzen Republik machte und die Sklaverei abschaffte. In 180 Minuten gelingt Philippe Niang ein atemberaubendes episches Werk, welches die komplexe Persönlichkeit des Helden der haïtianischen Unabhängigkeitsbewegung und der Emanzipation des Schwarzen Volkes wiederzugeben vermag.
