The end of the Cold War is commonly perceived as a major caesura in world history, which fundamentally altered political, economic and social formations across the globe. However, the beginnings and the consequences of this change remain highly controversial. As such, the 18th Berlin Roundtables wants to focus on the implications of this revolutionary process for the social sciences and humanities: To what extent has the end of the Cold War influenced the way contemporary scholarship conceptualizes and approaches the world? What new questions, concepts and fields have come to the fore? How do these changes connect to broader transformations in the pre and post-1989 landscape? What is the new grand narrative of our post 1989 era?
Lectures will be followed by discussion and a
reception.
Der Umbruch kam überraschend. Wer aus der Geschichte zu lernen versucht hatte, sah sich getäuscht. Wie verarbeitet man das als Sozialhistoriker? DDR-Zusammenbruch und Wiedervereinigung ermöglichten politisches Engagement und zwangen zu wissenschaftsinstitutioneller Arbeit. Als Historiker in der Politik - was blieb davon übrig? National-, europa- und weltgeschichtlich war 1989-91 eine tiefe Zäsur. Wie haben sich dadurch das Denken und die Praxis in der Geschichtswissenschaft verändert? Ein persönlicher Rückblick.
Jürgen Kocka zählt zu den renommiertesten Historiker weltweit. Nach Studien in Marburg, Wien, Berlin und Chapel Hill wurde er mit einer Arbeit zum Verhältnis von Kapitalismus und Bürokratie in der deutschen Industrialisierung promoviert. Er gehört zu den Begründern der Historischen Sozialwissenschaft. Neben der Geschichte der Arbeit und des Bürgertums standen die Sozialgeschichte der DDR und die historische Komparatistik im Zentrum seines Interessens. Von 2001 bis 2007 war Jürgen Kocka Präsident des WZB. Seit 2008 ist er Vizepräsident der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Permanent Fellow am Internationalen Geisteswissenschaftlichen Kolleg „Arbeit und Lebenslauf in globalgeschichtlicher Perspektive“ der Humboldt-Universität. Zuletzt erschien von ihm „Geschichte des Kapitalismus“, C.H. Beck 2013.
