Anlässlich des 80. Geburtstages von Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Lars Johanson veranstaltet die Mainzer Turkologie ein Symposium über „Turkic Linguistics: The State of the Art“ mit Teilnahme von bekannten Sprachwissenschaftlern, ehemaligen Doktoranden und Gastwissenschaftlern. Professor Johanson, geboren in Schweden, war seit 1972 an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU) tätig, zuerst als Humboldt-Stipendiat, ab 1973 als Privatdozent und seit 1981 als Professor für Turkologie am Seminar für Orientkunde. Unter seiner Leitung wurde die Mainzer Turkologie zu einem international führenden Zentrum für turkologische Sprachwissenschaft aufgebaut. Auch im Ruhestand ist er weiterhin für die Wissenschaft aktiv: Professor Johanson ist Herausgeber der Reihe „Turcologica“ und der Zeitschrift „Turkic Languages“ (Harrassowitz) sowie der „Encyclopedia of Turkic Languages and Linguistics“ (Brill).
Der öffentliche Teil der Veranstaltung, zu dem alle Interessierten eingeladen sind, findet am Samstag, 19. März 2016, ab 9:30 Uhr in Mainz, Hegelstraße 59, Raum 00-208/212, statt. Das Programm ist im Internet unter http://www.orientalistik.uni-mainz.de/ zu finden.
