Essen ist einer der "rätselhaften" blinden Flecken in der Planung, wie die American Planning Association 2007 festgestellt hat. Demnach finden die wichtigsten planungsrelevanten Aspekte menschlichen Lebens ausführlich Beachtung (Wasser, Luft, Wohnen) - mit der Ausnahme von Essen (Morgan 2015). Das galt bis vor kurzem auch für die Geographie. Hier hat sich aber in den letzten 10 Jahren eine eigene Subdisziplin, die "Food Geographies", etabliert.
