The establishment of the historic centre of Aleppo reaches back more than 4000 years. It is one of the few continuously inhabited cities in the world. In 1986 Aleppo, with its coherent 360 hectares urban fabric, became a UNESCO world heritage site. The continuous armed conflict in Syria that has reached Aleppo in 2012, causes severe damage and destruction to invaluable monuments and inhabited neighborhoods. Therefore the historic city has been added to the list of endangered cultural heritage.
To discuss the challenges and strategies of future rebuilding of Aleppo’s historic city, the Department of International Urbanism (Institute of Urban Planning and Design) as well as the laboratory of the international Master program Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design (IUSD Lab) organize a workshop on “Strategies for Post-War Reconstruction”. The event is hosted for invited young researchers and experts at the University of Stuttgart. The workshop, initiated by Dr. Anette Gangler und Franziska Laue, will take place 16.06. – 19.06.2016 and is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The workshop will be introduced by a lecture event on the 16th of June 2016 in the lecture hall M11.11 (1.08) at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning (K1), Keplerstr. 11, 70174 Stuttgart.
Invited lecturers:
Giulia Annalinda Neglia is assistant professor at Politecnico di Bari, Italy. Her research focus is on urban morphology and landscape design for the southeastern Mediterranean and middle eastern cities, with special expertise on Aleppo.
Omar Abdulaziz Hallaj, born in Aleppo, is consultant on urban planning, development and local governance. He is co-coordinator of the Syria Project at the Common Space Initiative in Beirut, where he is engaged in facilitating various dialogues and research projects for peace building and recovery planning in Syria.
Robert Templer is Director of the Aleppo Project at the Center for Conflict Negotiation and Recovery at Central European University, Budapest.
The lectures and workshop will be held in English.
