The fight against corruption and malpractice has entered a new phase. In many companies, compliance departments were created over the past two decades and most recently, large hospitals followed suit. National laws and international rules have become more stringent and sanctions more severe. However, large, prestigious companies, clinics, associations, athletes, or political parties still use illegal methods in order to accomplish their goals. Some news magazines primarily focus on revealing those scandals and recording them in a striking manner. Therefore, causes and consequences tend to be neglected in the public debate.
The Herrenhausen Symposium will discuss the similarities and differences of the latest far-reaching corruption and manipulation cases. Particular attention will be put on the conditions that tempt organizations and their high-ranking staff to leave the path of legality at great risk to the organization and their own career. "Bribery, Fraud, Cheating..." invites representatives from different countries and various sectors and is part of the Herrenhausen Symposia Series initiated by the Volkswagen Foundation. The steering committee is chaired by Prof. Dr. Markus Pohlmann and consists of Prof. Dr. Dieter Dölling, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Dannecker and Prof. Dr. Dieter Hermann (all Ruprechts-Karls-University Heidelberg).
