The IOS organizes the summer school in cooperation with the Akademie für Politische Bildung Tutzing (APB) and the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies (EACES). The Academy will take place from Monday June 11 to Wednesday June 13, 2018 in Tutzing (Germany) situated on beautiful Lake Starnberg, between Munich and the Alps mountain range. It will bring together young scholars in economics, sociology and political science to present their research on firm behavior. The key topics of the summer school are firm survival and productivity, regional competitiveness and trade, as well as determinants of firm heterogeneity in productivity and innovation.
The behavior of firms is affected by the changing business and political environment, relationships with key stakeholders, technological changes, access to local and foreign markets and many other factors. The goal of this Summer Academy is studying the wide range of factors influencing firm behavior in Central and Eastern Europe, including countries of the former Soviet Union. Four keynote speakers from universities and an international organization will deliver lectures and provide comments to young researchers: Davide Castellani (University of Reading, United Kingdom), Ichiro Iwasaki (Hitotsubashi University, Japan), Helena Schweiger (EBRD Office of the Chief Economist, United Kingdom), Martin Srholec (CERGE-EI, Czech Republic). The informal environment and picturesque views on Lake Starnberg shall promote academic networking and help young scholars to develop their current and pin down future research ideas.
The Summer Academy on Central and Eastern Europe was established by the IOS in 2009, to bring together mainly Ph.D. students and Postdocs in a workshop atmosphere. Since 2011, EACES has joined in the organization of the Summer Academy. Over these past years, the Summer Academy on Central and Eastern Europe has developed into a prime early career event within comparative economics, arguably outstanding among those under the auspices of EACES.
An increasing number of applicants compete for between 12 and 15 participant spots, with recent admission rates below 25 per cent.
An outstanding list of keynote lecturers by now includes Michael V. Alexeev (Indiana University), Sascha O. Becker (University of Warwick), Sumon K. Bhaumik (University of Sheffield), Andrew Clark (Paris School of Economics), Christian, Dustmann (University College London), Alexander Danzer (University of Eichstätt), Ira Gang (Rutgers University), Michael Gebel (University of Bamberg), Karl. F. Habermeier (IMF), Stephan Klasen (University of Göttingen), Rainer Martin (ECB), Mieke Meurs (American University), Cristiano Perugini (University of Perugia), Alexander Plekhanov (EBRD), to name but a few.
