Byzanz gilt als Paradebeispiel für ein übertriebenes Zeremoniell, das sich in sich selbst erschöpft und die Betroffenen zu "Kriecherei und unwürdiger Schmeichelei" verleitet (so der Duden zum Stichwort "Byzantinismus"). In dem Vortrag soll versucht werden, die tatsächliche Bedeutung des Zeremoniells zu untersuchen, wobei einerseits seine "Binnenwirkung" und
andererseits die Wahrnehmung von außen anhand konkreter Beispiele dargestellt und analysiert werden soll.
