Seizing Opportunities for More Climate Protection
Conference: Climate Opportunity 2019 on 15 October 2019 in Berlin’s Futurium
The energy transition is not just good for the climate and the environment – it also presents a range of opportunities in other areas: future-proof jobs, new sources of revenue for local authorities and businesses, and healthcare savings due to fewer incidences of respiratory diseases. Can greater awareness of these cobenefits add much-needed momentum to the climate policy debate? Will opportunity-oriented climate policy engender a strong political will to achieve the Paris Agreement? The Climate Opportunity 2019 conference addresses these questions, presents recent research findings, and provides a space for political discussions with international delegations from environment ministries and government agencies in Germany, the US, South Africa, India, and other countries.
Under the auspices of the International Climate Initiative, Climate Opportunity 2019 will be opened by Germany’s Chief Climate Negotiator Karsten Sach on 15 October. Sach is Director-General for European and international Policy in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety.
Renewable energies are on the rise around the world for a variety of socio-economic reasons. How can Germany capitalise on these opportunities – and continue to be a role model for opportunity-oriented climate policy? And with a view to the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP25) in Chile: How can climate policy and the Sustainable Development Goals be connected to make a just global energy transition possible? What political levers can ministries pull to maximise health benefits and opportunities for employment and economic prosperity? Is the concept of a “Just Transition” favoured by German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze viable at international level, and to what extent is it compatible with the Paris Climate Agreement? By way of example, the conference will spotlight change agents from the partner countries Vietnam, South Africa, and Turkey.
With high-level international policy forums, interactive working groups, and an exhibition on climate initiatives, Climate Opportunity 2019 will, like the recent SDG Summit in New York, help to prepare environment ministries, governments and international organisations for COP25.
