Der Schutz des geologischen Erbes, die Pflege der Geodiversität – durch Geotopschutz und andere Strategien und Maßnahmen – besitzt keinen großen Stellenwert in Deutschland, weder in der Wissenschaft noch im Verwaltungshandeln oder in der Praxis des Naturschutzes. Andere Länder sind da weiter und auch internationale Organisationen wie die International Union for Conservation of Nature betonen verstärkt die Bedeutung des Geoerbeschutzes.
Die Veranstaltung behandelt die Situation von Geotop- und Geodiversitätsschutz in Deutschland und lädt zur Diskussion über Erfordernisse und mögliche Veränderungen ein.
